How to be more productive as a mom.

Lets face it we’re all super busy from time to time. Being a military wife and mom to three girls it’s hard to find time for everything that needs to get done. Here are some tips to help you be more productive and find time for the fun stuff.

First things first get a good calendar. I know cell phones have calendars these days but there’s just something about having it in writing in front of you. Here are a few I love.

 

 

Meal plan and prep. I’m not great at this but I’ve been making an effort. I keep a list of meals I have on hand on the refrigerator. That way when the kids come home and I’ve realized that I haven’t planned anything for dinner I just pick something off my list. I also try to prep my dinners before my kids get home from school. If we are having tacos I might cook the meat before I pick them up so when dinner time comes around and I have one kid doing homework, another singing loudly and a toddler hanging on my leg all I have to do is finish it up. When you’re short on time and the house is a mess set a timer. Set a timer for 5 minutes and enlist the help of your kids. If everyone cleans up for 5 minutes it will make a huge difference and you’ll feel more at ease.

Take a break from social media. I know it’s tough. I know for me the ten minutes that I spend on Facebook in the afternoon could be spent switching the laundry or washing out the kids lunchboxes so I don’t have to do it in the morning.

Make to do lists. I grew up in the age of paper and pencils and love making lists. I put even the tiniest thing on my list like take playdough downstairs. Every time I finish something on my list I cross it off and feel a sense of accomplishment. You can get my free printable to do lists here.

 

 

Declutter and organize. Get rid of unused and unneeded items. The less you have around the house the less you’ll have to clean up. If everything has a place you’ll spend less time looking for stuff.

Pick one day a week and do your cleaning. Recently a friend of mine told me that she does all her cleaning on Monday. For the rest of the week she only has to do the basic straightening. I don’t always do it on Monday but do choose one day of the week that works for me to do it all. On that day I wash all the bedding, clean the bathrooms, vacuum upstairs and downstairs, clean the hardwood floors and do the laundry. It’s a lot but it sure makes the rest of my week easier.

My goal is to finish my tasks so that at the end of the day I can play with the kids without thinking about all the things I have to do. Who doesn’t like to sit down and watch TV at night without feeling guilty because you didn’t get something done.

    Great ideas! It actually does help so much having your kids help pick up for just a few minutes. We play a song that’s between 4-5 minutes long (a fun, fast one that my 4 year old actually requests now. ha ha) and it’s a game to see if we can get everything picked up in that amount of time! 😉

    This is perfect timing! I was thinking about shopping for a good physical planner just this morning! I’ll have to check out your options.

    I really like the idea of all the cleaning on one day. Before I started my blog my husband and I would each do one task (15 minutes a day seemed more efficient than a long block of time), but now it feels chaotic. Maybe we will make a change!

    I love this idea of setting a timer to dedicate some cleaning time. I just get so carried away and distracted and start multi-tasking and sometimes don’t accomplish what I set out to do. Great tip!
