How I Earned $160 In My Fifth Month Blogging

It’s time for another blog income report! Blogging is my side hustle. It’s how I afford the little things that we want but don’t necessarily need. Being a mom blogger has allowed me to stay at home with my kids while still helping to provide financially for my family. Since this post was published my income has increased!

This past month has been chaos for my family! We packed up our family and moved from Colorado to Alabama. You would think having moved over nine times that it would get easier. Well that’s not the case. We were so busy getting our house ready to sell, looking into new schools for the girls, finding a new house and getting things ready that there wasn’t much time for blogging. Luckily I had planned ahead and wrote out my blog posts a month in advance. It was super helpful to have them written and scheduled, but my lack of internet access made it difficult to share on social media. I found myself connecting to WiFi at McDonald’s and in the hotel at night.

I did manage to stay on top of things for the most part. Even with all this confusion I was able to accomplish my blogging goals for the month. I increased my followers and had a 124% increase in income!!! How did I do it? I’ll get to that later in the post. Let’s take a look at my followers, posts and goals first.

Goals for July:

  • Increase my social media following on all accounts by 100. I actually did more than that!

  • Post at least three times a week on Instagram. I’m really bad about posting to Instagram, it’s an area that I need to improve on. I didn’t meet this goal but did improve on my posting frequency.

  • Write 10 blog posts. This should be easy, I haven’t been able to do any crafts for my home in months because of our move. As soon as we are settled in I’ll be crafting like crazy. I published exactly 10 blog posts.

  • Set up a home office space for myself. In our current house I blog from the kitchen table, but our next house is twice the size. I have a spot all picked out and can’t wait to turn it into my own creative space. I did get my desk set up and a few pictures hung but still have some work to do. It seems like that’s the last priority when moving.

Social Media Followers:

Instagram: June 1,364    July 1,500

Pinterest: June 1,200   July 1,490

Facebook: June 129   July 151

Page Views: June 7,299   July 4,446

My followers increased in July but my page views decreased. I think the decrease was because I didn’t have access to the internet for almost two weeks. I wasn’t able to promote my posts as much as usual.

Income:

AdSense: June $35.64   July $160.31

Amazon Affiliate: June $0   July $1.30

Flex Offers: June $0.48   July $0.51

Share a Sale: June $0   July $0

Social Fabric: June $0    July $0

Journey From Stay At Home Mom To Work At Home Mom: Part Two

What have I been up to in July to grow my blog?

I recently purchased an amazing affiliate marketing course! I’m about halfway through the class and have already learned so much. It’s the kind of class that you don’t just go through once. No matter how many times you reread the materials you’ll continue to learn. I would highly Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. When I first looked into the class I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend the money. After months of thinking it over I decided I wanted to take my blog to the next level. The cost was totally worth it.

This past month I worked on creating a Resource Page. On my resource page you’ll find any blogging resources I use regularly as well as some of my favorite products and sites. You can check it out here.

My Recommendations

I’ve also been reading through She Means Busniess by Carrie Green. It’s an amazing and inspiring book that helps you identify your passion and create a plan to reach your goals. For me this applies to my blogging journey. I would definitely recommended reading her book.

Pinterest and Twitter are my biggest concerns when it comes to social media. I continue to pin like crazy and have started paying closer attention to twitter. I follow new people within my niche and like, comment and retweet their content. I’ve found by doing this I’ve gained more followers and traffic to my blog.

Update: I now schedule my tweets and pins! I use Tailwind for Pinterest and love it! Since starting with Tailwind I’ve gained over 3,000 followers and more than doubled my blog traffic. Give Tailwind a try for free by clicking here... For Twitter I use Crowdfire to schedule my posts. As a mom I don’t have time to be on social media constantly, scheduling makes things so much easier. I’ve increased my followers since starting with Crowdfire. They will create a posting schedule based on your best engagement times or your can create your own schedule. To try Crowdfire click here…

I also worked on my email subscriber list. I had created some printable a few months ago for my subscribers but recently learned that legally you need to own the images and fonts that you use in printable. I purchased a clip art and font collection with an extended commercial license. There are so many confusing aspects of blogging and I’m not quite sure about all the legal issues yet, but I took the original printable down and created new ones using the clip art and fonts that I purchased. You can find my new printable here.

My Goals For August:

-Gain 200 new followers on Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

-Write and publish 10 blog posts.

-Finish Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing

-Obviously increase my income.

-Create an Instagram schedule to keep myself on track with posting.

I find it super helpful to write these posts. I’m able to keep track of my progress and goals. By writing out my goals for the month, I’m more likely to accomplish them. This concept is something that I learned from She Means Business.

August has been all over the place. I don’t know if it is because of school being out, or changes to the various algorithms . We’ve also had bouts of illness that kept me away from the computer. Even so, it has been a good month. Right now I’m spending some time doing some evaluating to see where I am gaining the most…and getting out 2-3 posts a week.

Way to hit your goals and hit the ground running!! I am still working on monetizing my blog well and am two years into it. Thanks for being so open in sharing how you are doing it! I finally hit $100 adsense threshold ( in the entire time I’ve been monetizing) and am working to keep it going.

That’s great to hear! Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing has been on my radar. I’ve just been hesitant to make the investment.

I created a parenting course and an e-book on dealing with temper tantrums, so now I’m working on my sales funnels so that I can earn passive income from all the hard work I put into my products this summer!

I follow others, post often, take part in Facebook follow threads and pin mostly from 7-12 at night.

    • dbern582@gmail.com | 23rd Aug 17

I pin and tweet like crazy! I also follow those within my niche. I do all my pinning at night after 7pm. For every 6 pins of someone else’s I pin one of my own to a group board.

Courses are great! I am constantly investing to further my knowledge! I also recommend the course I talk about here http://jenniferdawn.ca/how-pinterest-earns-me-a-full-time-income/ . It has been a real game changer for me!

  22. Flossie McCowald | SuperMomHacks | 17th Aug 17

Do you think your big AdSense jump (esp given that you were down pageviews) has anything to do with starting the course? If not, how do you explain it? I’ve been debating whether to invest in this course, too, so am glad to hear it’s worthwhile for you so far – I am behind on other courses/commitments but have this on my list for the fall, once I’m caught up and the girls are back to school 🙂 .

    • dbern582@gmail.com | 23rd Aug 17

I think my adsense went up from paying close attention to my google analytics everyday. I see which posts have the highest ecpm then promote those posts. Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing has increased my affiliate income during the current month. I’ve had more clicks on the products and sales. The course really teaches you about every aspect of affiliate marketing and not just slapping affiliate links into posts.

  23. Emily | 17th Aug 17

Congratulations! What a great accomplishment! I love setting goals by month.

  24. Mae | 17th Aug 17

I love posts like this as it inspires me to do better in blogging! I also love celebrating even the smallest of wins, so these report is awesome! Congrats to yah!

Wow! I’ve been blogging for three years now but have never had the money to invest in being able to make my blog work for me as it were, but I’m bookmarking this for when I can afford to start.

  26. Flossie McCowald | SuperMomHacks | 19th Aug 17

OK, so I tried to comment on this the other day and while I’m now subscribed to the comments, my own still didn’t go thru it seems 🙁 – SO – you go! So impressive! Esp. glad to hear how well the Affiliate Marketing course is going for you – I’ve been thinking about taking that!

  27. Davi | 23rd Aug 17

Wow, what a great month you’ve had! What do you think were the factors in the huge increase in Adsense?
