As a parent, your number one priority is your kid’s health. From the moment they arrive, you’re constantly trying to make sure that they’re happy and healthy. This is getting a lot harder because kids are less active and there is so much junk food out there. But it’s important that you encourage good habits in them now because they’ll carry on those good habits into adulthood.
If they pick up bad habits when they’re young, they’re not likely to be healthy when they’re older. It’s hard to convince young kids that they need to pick up those healthy habits now so if you’re struggling, here are a few ideas to help you along the way.

Cut Down Screen Time
The biggest challenge that parents face right now is technology. Kids would rather be inside playing on their phones and tablets than outside playing. You’re fighting an uphill battle and you’ll never convince them to exercise if you don’t start putting some restrictions on their technology use. You don’t have to ban screens entirely but it’s important that you set clear guidelines so they can only use them during certain periods of the day. They’re going to fight you on this at first but if you refuse to budge, they’ll soon adapt. Then they’ll be more likely to do something active during those periods when they can’t use screens.
Join A Sports Team
Getting them to join a sports team is a great way to make sure they’re doing regular exercise in a fun environment. There are a lot of good sports to try but basketball is probably one of the best. It involves a lot of running around and jumping which is a great workout. The team element of it is great for their development as well. It’s a fairly cheap sport for them to get into as well. You don’t need to buy any expensive equipment, just some youth basketball uniforms which won’t cost you that much. Just remember when you’re trying to encourage your kids to join a sports team, don’t force them into it. Suggest the idea and see if they’re willing to try to help them find a sport they enjoy. You want to teach them that exercising is a fun thing, not a chore that they’re forced into.
This is the most important thing. Kids don’t always listen to what you tell them, but they copy what you do. If they see you eating unhealthy food and you never exercise, they’re going to copy that behavior. If you then start telling them that they need to eat healthily, they’ll turn around and ask why they should if you don’t. That’s why it’s so important that you lead by example. If you cook healthy food and exercise regularly, they’ll pick up on it and they’ll be more inclined to do the same.
Convincing your kids to pick up these healthy habits is difficult but it’s not impossible. These are some of the best ways to encourage them to look after their health from a young age.
