Life seems to get busier and busier. With all the responsibilities of being an adult, there isn’t much time to relax. Free time seems to be a thing of the past, reserved only for childhood.
We all, especially moms, need to be able to take a moment, take stock, meditate and enjoy some well-deserved downtime. The trouble is that there just don’t seem to be enough hours in the day to allow it. If you’re a time-strapped mom who desperately needs some free time to herself, here are some ways to create it…

The time is there… You just need to take it. The trouble is that there’s always something that needs doing. You need to resign yourself to that. Clear some space for yourself. Set a reminder alarm for 3pm to do absolutely nothing for half an hour. Resist the urge to sweep up those crumbs, put your phone in a drawer somewhere… Just relax. Read a book, listen to some music, reconnect with the things that bring you joy. A few books I’ve been loving lately are The Finnish Way, Girl Wash Your Face and The Handmaids Tale. When your half hour is up, you’ll return to life so much happier.
Meal prep, meal prep, meal prep!
A nutritious home-cooked meal is a cornerstone of maintaining a happy, healthy family. But if you find yourself losing hours and hours out of your week because you were cooking, something needs to change. Never underestimate the power of meal-prep. It’s not only a great time-saving exercise, but it’s also a great way to ensure that there’s always something healthy in the fridge or freezer so that you’re not tempted by expensive and fattening yet alluring takeout.
Invest in making a low-to-no maintenance home
We all want to be able to relax in a clean, tidy home… But we don’t want to dedicate the lion’s share of our free time to maintaining it. Fortunately, a few prudent investments can make your home much lower maintenance. Hardwood flooring is a much lower maintenance alternative to carpet. Bean bags from Fombag.com are a much lower maintenance alternative to chairs and loveseats. You don’t have to go fishing for crumbs in the space between cushions, and if you should spill something on them, you can simply throw the cover in the washing machine. Pick up some zero-maintenance houseplants to brighten up the place. There are many ways in which you can make your home lower maintenance. They’ll make you a happier homemaker, too!
As much as outside factors can drain our free time, we quite often don’t do ourselves any favors. We all have time-wasting habits, and it’s up to you to identify and eliminate yours. Want to know a great place to start? Get off your smartphone!
Until someone adds an extra 4 hours into the day, it’s up to us to make the most out of the time we have!
