Homemaking is the profession of creating and maintaining a home. The creation of a home is more than accomplishing the daily tasks required to keep a house running. It isn’t simply wearing an apron, cooking elaborate meals, and doing laundry. It is more than the day-in and day-out chores that we do every day.
Homemaking is the art of creating an environment that distinguishes a family. It is the process that brings comfort, happiness, and most importantly inspires those that reside within its embrace. Homemaking is representative of values, beliefs, hopes, and dreams. Just as no two people are the same, no two homes will ever be the same. However, it is this individuality that makes homemaking an art.
Maintaining a home can be challenging, but it can be this struggle that makes creating a home worthwhile. I understand most of us get sick of cleaning and keeping the house up day after day. If you have children, it can be even more of a struggle. I have three children, two dogs, and a cat. Maintaining a clean and functional house with these entities sometimes feels like I’m trying to sweep my front porch in the middle of a sandstorm. I battle toys, crumbs, dog hair, and toothpaste everywhere-I mean everywhere! Piles of laundry, dishes, and toys seem to form instantaneously. It sometimes seems that no sooner has one chore been accomplished, that two more have manifested. Sometimes finding joy in these tasks can seem impossible.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I wanted to take care of my children. I was even excited about cleaning the house, cooking the meals for my family and grocery shopping. Fifteen years later, being a homemaker is fulfilling, but there are days that I have to remind myself why I do it.
These are just the tip of the iceberg. Each of the things listed above can be broken down into even more detailed tasks. As mentioned before, each person and home are different. Your homemaking tasks will look different than everyone else because you are a unique person with a unique home.
I’d love to hear what being a homemaker means to you! Tell me in the comments below!
