Laundry is a never-ending job. As soon as you finish washing, drying, folding and putting it away, there’s always more in the hamper. Since we spend so much time doing laundry why not make our laundry routine more frugal and save some money.
I feel like I do laundry every day and never really finish it. To me, it’s worse than doing dishes. I have three daughters who seem to like changing their outfits multiple times per day or putting clean clothes in the dirty laundry hamper when they are told to clean their rooms. Those two things create never-ending laundry at my house.

Sitting here right now, I have two loads of laundry done and two more to go. Of course, by the time I finish them, the hamper will be full again. Then there is bedding day, the day that I strip all of the beds and wash them. That’s easily four loads of laundry.

4 Easy Ways To Create A More Frugal Laundry Routine
Use Less Laundry Detergent
After doing some research, I’ve discovered that you only need to use 2 tbs of laundry detergent per load of laundry. I usually use the lines in the cap to measure my soap but from now on, I’ll be using less.
Here are a few great articles about how much laundry detergent you should be using.
Dryer balls decrease drying time, which saves you money. It’s an easy switch to make that can make a huge difference. If you’re attached to the scent provided by dryer sheets, you can add essential oils to wool dryer balls. It’s also worth mentioning that dryer sheets are full of chemicals.
Fabric softeners also coat the fibers of your clothes making them harder to clean which is actually working against you. I have made my own dryer balls in the past and also have gotten them from Grove Collaborative. If you’re looking to save time I suggest buying them.
It would be best if you cleaned out your dryers lint trap after every load of laundry. If the lint trap has a thick coating of lint, your dryer must work harder to dry your clothes. Not only does it help your clothes dry faster, but it also helps prevent fires.
Stop Buying Washing Machine Cleaners
I know that washing machine cleaners make your laundry room smell great, but they are a waste of money. You can clean your washing machine by simply using white vinegar. I typically clean my washing machine once every three months unless it needs it sooner. Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into your washing machine and run it on a normal “hot” cycle. You won’t be left with a vinegar smell like you might think.
